Meso Meso - Mitten (Lacies)

July 5th, 2008

Meso Meso’s Mitten is an album of firsts; the debut album for label Lacies’ Records (co-curated by Andrew of The Boats) and of course the worlds first chance to hear the sweet delicate sounds of Meso Meso.

Meso Meso (or Yumiko to her friends) has been an artist to watch on the bustling Tokyo underground performing with Shugo Tokumaisu’s Magical Band and Muffin. Yet it is her solo voice that is most intriguing, mixing soft home brewed acoustics with a pop sensibility via the most beautiful Kahimi Kerie vocals. Mixing simple elements together is Meso Meso’s skill whether that be a gentle strummed acoustic guitar resting on a simple melody of a toy piano or the accordion being fused with a sample of a locomotive. This is the most sweet and delicate music we have had the pleasure of listening to in a long time. This truly is a debut record you will want to get to know, as you will be left intrigued by the veil of mystery that is evident throughout (especially on the tracks named after friends). This is a quiet statement, which is captivating and leaves you wanting more. This is a must for fans of skewed pop with a heart-warming edge.
